Scary Movie (1991) is a low-budget, cult classic indie horror film from Austin, Texas, starring a young John Hawkes as a paranoid teen who believes an escaped mental patient is hiding in a local Halloween haunted house. Directed by Daniel Erickson, the film blends slasher tropes with psychological horror, capturing a genuine Halloween atmosphere with its autumnal setting and suspenseful score by Hank Hehmsoth, and an amazing soundtrack featuring The Butthole Surfers, Roky Erickson, Calvin Russell, Eric Mole, Denny Freeman, and Paul Leary. It was initially overlooked but has gained a cult following and was recently re-released on Blu-ray by the American Genre Film Archive (AGFA).
